[ Erik sounds exhausted. Mentally, if not physically, and there's a movement as he sits up; he's been in bed for most of the last few days. ]

[It's just his 'a lot' tended to be more self-destructive than resorting to murder or anything.]

Why am I not surprised? You... care a lot for him, don't you? [he pauses.] How are you getting along here? It's... fine if you don't want to talk about it. It just seems like a shame to waste time fighting each other here.

He hesitates before he breathes out. ]

He is from ten years before me. We are attempting to adjust to that.

I know-- Erik. [Is that what he should call him? Magneto seems silly right now, when neither is in costume. Grandpa is a little awkward when he's... not that old yet.

[Maybe he won't be able to change anything at all, but eh... he can try in small ways.]

I hope you figure it out. That's a pretty... big gap. Loki is from a year ahead of me and sometimes that feels entirely too massive.

Why would it ever? Fighting for our kind requires blood, war, the knowledge that if we don't fight we will be slaughtered, taken and used by barbaric humans.

[ He huffs out a noise. ]

I never imagined this fight would end well for me.

[ He's still surprised, at times, to know that he survived Cuba. But as Logan said; he was a survivor. ]

I'm not sure if it's possible. He still remembers me as the same man that chose ideals over friendship - that's not so easy to forgive.

It's not impossible, I don't think. You've got time here to work on that, if you really want.

And not all mutants are terrorising creatures that are out to end the human race, but that hardly stops them executing and experimenting on us, does it?

[ Really not the right person to be saying this to, grandson.

He shakes his head, pursing his lips, eyes closed as he tries to reign himself. ]

[He lets out a sigh -- this sort of got off track, huh?] There are always going to be bad people. It's why we fight, right?

[Or why he fights, even if he got off course for a while... ran away from it all.

It isn't like I'm saying I want our kind to suffer, you know. Or that we should turn a blind eye to people trying to execute or experiment on anyone.

I don't damn the entire human race. I just accept them for what they are; lesser evolved cowards that shy away from the truth because they are too afraid to see what the future holds for them.

[ Nothing is simple and not even this is easy; it's not as if any of this is easy or something to be enjoyed. It's a never ending fight, one he has been fighting since he was barely fourteen. ]

We do not deserve to live in the shadows.

Some of my best friends... my team are humans and they're far from cowards. As a matter of fact, when someone did want to lock me up for being a potential threat, they're the ones who broke me out, who risked everything and wouldn't let me give up. Even when they should probably be scared of me, they aren't.

... No, on that, we agree. We don't.

And humans are the ones that locked me away. Humans are the ones that attempted to set missiles on me and my kind for simply existing when we were the ones that had prevented another war. You might have the best experiences with them but I do not.

[ And he knows he's coloured by it. He does kill humans but it's never without reason; all the people that die at his hand deserve it. ]

I know you don't, and I really can't pretend to know what all you've gone through. And as much as I hate it, I can see why killing would seem like an option in some situations... [But-- that didn't mean he had to approve of it, right? Or agree with it.]

[ There's a pause for a moment, and, then... ]

You and Charles are far too alike. Are you sure you're not his grandson?

[That's-- kind of surprising to hear, but it does earn a bit of a laugh despite it all.]

Sorry, guess your grandson ended up falling pretty far from the tree.

No, sorry. We got off track with stuff that... doesn't need to really be discussed at the moment. Let's get back to what you asked me. Just... keep in mind that there are different universes, different timelines. What happens in mind might not even be a thing in yours.

He hesitates for a moment before he voices the question. ]

[ Erik goes tense and it's clear from his voice that that isn't what he wanted to hear. ]

[Which he has a feeling is the exact opposite of what Erik wants to hear, going by the tension Billy can almost feel, even through the phone.]

[ It's almost frightening, the way that Erik's voice drops and he sounds hard, a little broken. He's getting more and more tense and he can't handle it. ]

[Why else would he really even bring it up? Billy is quiet for a while before he breathes out a sigh.]

So, there's a pretty big difference between our worlds.

[ Erik is quiet for a long moment, desperately long, and he hisses out air between his teeth. To think Shaw is still alive in another world... ]
